01About the place

On the threshold of the entrance to the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Vida, in Cistella, you can read the inscription in Latin: «FRANCISCO VEHI ME FECIT 1695 RECTOR HUIUS PARROQUIAE.

AVE MARIA ANUNTIASIONSIS ET VITE SINE PECATO CONCEPTA», which translates as «Francesc Vehí, rector of this parish, made me in 1695. Hail Mary of the Annunciation and of Life, conceived without sin». The rector Francesc Vehí was the promoter of the renovation works of the building at the end of the 17th century.

It has a medieval origin related to the protection of health, since devotion to the Mare de Déu de Vida intensified in the town as a spiritual resource in the face of the plague epidemics that affected the region. During the Civil War (1936-1939), the hermitage suffered looting and desecration of its interior, losing the altars and the original image of the Virgin, a fate shared by many temples in the area. Despite the material damage suffered during the conflict, the stone structure of the facade and its inscriptions remained intact.
