The Gorg del Molí dels Murris is one of the most beautiful natural corners of the Cogolls stream valley, in the municipality of Les Planes d’Hostoles, in the Garrotxa region.
It is a gorg formed by a small waterfall that falls into a deep pool of very clear water, surrounded by humid forest. The atmosphere is cool and shady almost all year round. The constant sound of the water and the shadow of the forest create a very peaceful feeling, as if the place were a little hidden from the world.
The waterfall and the gorg
The waterfall is not very high (about 3 - 4 meters), but the water falls continuously onto a round and quite deep pool. When the flow is good, the water forms a white curtain that contrasts with the dark green color of the gorg.
The water is usually very transparent because the stream flows through limestone terrain. This causes carbonate deposits to form over time, creating porous rocks and curious shapes around the waterfall.
Origin of the name
The name comes from an old flour mill that was next to the stream. In the past, the water was diverted with a small channel to move a hydraulic wheel that turned the millstones. Today, few remains remain, but the place name has been forever linked to the gorg.
Feeling of the place
Although it is now quite well-known, the gorg retains a very natural and wild aesthetic. The combination of limestone rock, clear water and dense forest gives it the appearance of almost a small natural amphitheater.
In summer, many people go there to bathe, although the water is surprisingly cold even on hot days.
The area is usually very crowded with people.
