01About the place

The Salt de la Caula is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Alt Empordà, in the municipality of Boadella i les Escaules, right where the torrent de la Caula overcomes a significant drop before meeting the river Muga.

Height: about 20m approx., the waterfall is quite impressive, especially when the torrent carries water after rain.

Formation: it falls on travertine rock (a porous limestone rock), and was formerly covered in travertines that gave it a more spectacular appearance; but in 2010 there was a landslide that changed its appearance.

When there is little water (summer/late spring) it looks more like a small roar than a powerful waterfall, but after rain the fall is very showy.

Best time to see it strong: spring or autumn, or just after rain.

Access is easy from the town of Les Escaules, walking a few minutes to the foot of the torrent.
