The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León.
Its historic Plateresque façade is one of the most representative works of the Spanish Renaissance and is famous for the small sculpted frog that visitors try to find. Throughout the centuries, the university has been an important center of knowledge and culture, attracting prominent thinkers, humanists, and writers.
