01About the place
Peñíscola Castle, perched atop a rocky outcrop 64 meters above sea level in Castellón, was built by the Knights Templar between 1294 and 1307 on the site of a former Moorish citadel.
It is notable for its austere Romanesque and Gothic architecture, as well as its later Renaissance walls, commissioned by Philip II to defend the coast against pirates. Its most famous historical event occurred in the 15th century when it served as the papal seat of Benedict XIII, also known as Pope Luna, during the Western Schism. It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.
