Ricardo Bofill's monument stands beside the A9 motorway in Le Perthus, just north of the border.
Completed in 1976 on a mound of earth excavated during the motorway's construction, it is a red brick temple with four columns evoking the Catalan flag, surrounded by a garden. Inaugurated after Franco's death, it was interpreted as a symbol of openness to Europe.
